Abstract
This article explores practical approaches to refactoring large-scale monolithic enterprise .NET applications, with a primary focus on reducing operational downtime and improving system reliability. It discusses common challenges in monolithic systems, including limited scalability, deployment complexity, and the risk of service disruption during releases. The paper highlights how modular design principles and incremental modernization strategies can improve maintainability without requiring a full system rewrite.
It also examines key engineering practices that support a smooth transition, such as automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, observability, rollback mechanisms, and phased migration techniques. In addition, it covers important enterprise considerations including database dependency management, backward compatibility, performance optimization, and operational resilience, enabling organizations to modernize legacy .NET systems while ensuring business continuity and minimizing downtime.
